Waterfowl Hunters Reminded to Clean Gear
While the primary attention of preventing the spread of aquatic nuisance species into North Dakota tends to fall on anglers and recreational boaters, waterfowl hunters are reminded their part in keeping waters ANS-free is just as important.
Lynn Schlueter, ANS coordinator for the state Game and Fish Department, said under new ANS regulations waterfowl hunters must clean boats, decoys, waders and other hunting equipment before leaving a water body. Hunters must also drain water from all hunting equipment prior to leaving the water, and are encouraged to brush their hunting dogs free of mud and seeds.
Cattails, phragmites, bulrushes and terrestrial plants may be transported as camouflage on boats. All other aquatic vegetation must be cleaned from boats prior to transportation into or within North Dakota.
North Dakota provides some wonderful duck hunting opportunities, but that could change if the habitat is severely altered by ANS. “ANS in a wetland could spread to other sites which include fishing areas,” Schlueter said. “All outdoor recreationists must work together to prevent ANS from being moved into or within the state.”
