Invasive Species

Canada Thistle

Invasive plants and animals are nonnative species that have been introduced or spread into an ecosystem from other areas. These are species that, in the absence of their natural limiting factors (disease, predators, food availability, etc.), may increase in numbers quickly, out-competing native species for resources needed to survive and successfully reproduce. Invasive species can be devastating both ecologically and economically.

Once an invasive species has become established in a new ecosystem, it can be extremely costly and difficult (if not impossible) to remove. Several species of noxious weeds and aquatic nuisance species are found in North Dakota. Some have caused or have the potential to cause significant environmental and ecological damage. The state has a variety of laws concerning invasive species.
